At Plantation Dental Associates, Dr. Brent Herbert and Dr. Mary Palenzuela want to remind patients that we provide thorough oral cancer screenings as part of our comprehensive dental services. Like all forms of cancer, early detection greatly improves the chances of successful treatment. Regular screenings are one of the most important ways to protect your health.
During your screening, Dr. Herbert or Dr. Palenzuela will carefully examine your lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, and throat for any abnormalities. Symptoms that may indicate oral cancer include mouth sores that don’t heal, unexplained bleeding, red or white patches, lumps, ear pain, persistent sore throat, difficulty swallowing, or a feeling of something caught in the throat. If you’ve noticed any of these signs for more than a week, schedule a visit right away.
Oral cancer claims one American life every hour, and while anyone can be affected, risks increase with tobacco use, heavy alcohol consumption, prolonged sun exposure, poor diet, GERD, and certain genetic factors. Men are more commonly affected than women.
The good news is that when detected early, oral cancers have an 80–90% survival rate. Early diagnosis often allows for simpler, less invasive treatments and far better outcomes.
We are welcoming new patients and encourage you to stay proactive with your oral health. Contact Plantation Dental Associates today to schedule your oral cancer screening with Dr. Herbert or Dr. Palenzuela.
